Dawn Sims has made a name for herself writing romantic fiction online. When she’s pushed to try her hand at publishing, she thinks she has everything figured out. The only problem? She’s never been in a relationship, especially one that has led her to finding The Big O.

So much for writing what you know.

Warner Green has had Dawn in his sights since she walked into his class in seventh grade. She broke his teenage heart not once, but twice, so seeing her in his night class at the local community college was an unexpected surprise.

Accidentally reading her bad erotica on her laptop was a blessing from the Smut Gods themselves.

It’s clear she has no idea what she’s writing about, but Warner does. In fact, he knows so much that he’s willing to offer her his services. The deal is simple: teach the good girl from high school everything she needs to know to write from experience. If he gets to live out a fantasy or two that he’s been harboring for almost a decade, then there’s no harm in that either.

The lessons turn more heated, and Dawn begins to question where Warner has learned his skills, but he’s not ready to talk, until his past comes back to haunt him at the worst possible time.

It shouldn’t matter when it’s for authentication purposes only.

“Come on. Say it. I know where you’re going.”

FAP-3D-Paperback-Stack-1Shifting a little to look at him, I resisted the urge to kick him in the nuts and lick his neck at the same time. I mean he looked pretty hot sitting in my chair eating that muffin. Stupid handsome face and fornication hair paired with what I assumed were dirty jeans and a plaid flannel.

“Fine. I’m going to buy a vibrator with the money you gave me. Happy?”

His smile was in full force now. “Hell yeah, I’m happy. Ecstatic, even.” He chewed around the pastry in his mouth and laughed. “I’ll come with you to make sure you get the right one.”

“Oh, hell no. Being with you in a porn shop is on my list of Things to Never Do before I Die.”

  ~~MY REVIEW~~

Ohmee gosh. FAP is so much fun. Did I just say that? If you’re over 30, google it. I refuse to explain.

When Amber announced she was going to publish FAP, I did a little jig as it’s been one of my favourite stories for a long time. Humerotica: there’s not much of it out there. And yet, this is such a sweet love story, in its own twisted way.

Dawn Sims writes fan fiction (therefore, I am immediately engaged. We have this in common.). She has a huge online readership and her fans want her to publish a book. So she sits down diligently to write a real bodice ripper. But. The readers expect lemons (a.k.a. love scenes). The more graphic, the better. Unfortunately, Dawn has little to no experience in this area. And when her frenemy Warner finds out what she’s up to, well… he cannot contain his mirth.

Dawn totes should have come to me. I mean, she could have downloaded my free PDF on writing lemons and nobody would have been the wiser. Silly girl. Besides, nobody should write a love scene which makes her uncomfortable. The readers will know.

Poor Warner has been tugging on Dawn’s braid for a long time without success. In his manly way, he’s been expressing his affection since grade school. He asked her to marry him when he was thirteen. What more could she want? And his attempts to connect simply have not gone well. Sad face.

Lo and behold, the woman of his dreams needs help out of her tight spot! And he is in the unique situation to provide it. But will she allow him to offer his expertise? After all, it’s for authentication purposes.

Five hugging stars to this story for giving me new fandom friends –Dawn and Wardo. They totally fit in here.

~~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~~

AuthPhotA true child of music, Amber’s parents surrounded her with the loudest beats they could find, molding her into a girl who found inspiration and meaning in lyrics and chords. Raised on John Hughes movies, Luck Dragons, and pirate ships, she dreamed of love and adventure. When Amber began to create her own world, she envisioned a place where Happy Ever Afters do exist. Since then, she has authored several romance novels, all of which focus on songs and the way they can touch people’s lives. Music may not be able to fix a broken heart, but it can provide one hell of a soundtrack for healing.

A full-time wife and mother with a full-time job, Amber finds her muse in everyday life and the people who bring her inspiration.

Emily Portman loves her job. A writer for Breakout! Magazine, she shadows and showcases up-and-coming bands. When her next assignment takes her to Austin, Texas, she can’t wait to add the city to her map of places she’s visited. Places she’s left without looking back. Her plan is to keep moving on, and the last thing she needs is a man holding her back. She’s not going down that road again.

Tyler Macy is stuck in a rut. Despite his exceptional talent as a musician, he has chosen to take a backseat with his music and let others grab the limelight. Wounded and mistrustful, he doesn’t appreciate his friends’ efforts to bring him back to center stage. Emily comes onto the scene and sees his full potential, but he fights to stay in the shadows, shutting her out before she can add to the scars another woman gave him.

For Tyler to find his music again, he needs to accept the help that Emily and their friends offer. When he discovers that his muse lies underneath Emily’s skin, it is still not enough to keep her from walking away. Neither will admit what they really want until it is too late.

Emily is once again thrown in Tyler’s path when she is assigned to join them on tour. Despite the pain in his past, Tyler sees that she is worth it, even if she’s stolen both his heart and peace of mind. In order for them to be together, they both must discover whether the music and their passion are enough to overcome the obstacles that separate them.

Maybe finding love is worth the risk.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW WITH EMILY PORTMAN:

Welcome, Emily!

 Thanks!

I went to music college many years ago, so like you, I’m accustomed to the personalities of artists (although my sphere was chiefly classical while yours is rock and roll). Musical circles are very eclectic. What’s it like dealing with rockers?

It really depends on the type, I suppose. I usually get to be with them before they become the next big thing, Before fame settles in. That’s not to say that ego isn’t a huge factor with each band I’ve been with. But there’s not a box that I could put all of them in. Of course I’ve seen my fair share of big heads and drunk groupies backstage. But I’ve also seen quite a few small bands make it relatively big and they’ve just been in awe of the experience.

Sometimes during a show, things happen backstage that are so unglamorous –contrary to public perception- that for years afterward, you still say to yourself, “I can’t believe that happened!” One time, I was standing backstage with other cast members. Onstage, a death was being enacted. It was so quiet in the house you could have heard a pin drop. We had a performer who was quite a large man. He’d been sitting in a wooden chair with arms for much of the scene, waiting for his cue. When he stood up, the chair was stuck to him. It crashed to the ground and probably everyone in the theater jumped. One of our performers slapped his hand over his mouth and bee-lined for the green room. He didn’t wait for the door to shut before braying laughter like a goat, so the whole audience heard.

The rest of us, backstage, were biting our tongues not to laugh. The musical director was (of course) in the pit and the director of the show was out in the audience. They were so ticked that we heard about it for ages, but nobody would snitch. Do you have an experience like that, that has stayed with you?

One of the younger bands I was shadowing had a show where a record exec was in the audience. The lead singer had practically burned a hole in the carpet for the last half hour before they were supposed to go onstage. And when they were called out, he took the stage with the biggest hard-on. I was impressed, actually. Performed the entire first song with his zipper tented.

Hahahah! Poor dude. Or not. He probably got a lot of cred for that. Your work for a recording label scouting for bands. How does one get hired for that job?

Hard work? Lots of begging? Just kidding. I was in the right place at the right time after I graduated. But I’ve always known what I wanted. So I went for it and hoped they’d take a chance on me.

Cool. Now, on a more serious note, one of the people in the band in Maybe becomes a drug addict. I was reading a different book about a band and the author described cocaine as a drug that people used casually and that nobody considered its use a big risk. When I was in music (admittedly, I’m ancient), the harshest drug I came across was coke and most people didn’t take anything stronger than marijuana, hash or acid. I was shocked when this author implied that cocaine is not a dangerous drug and can be used casually. Would you say that’s common thinking now?

My boss used to tell me that coke was an 80’s drug, but I don’t quite believe that. But I think heroin and meth? Those would be considered the coke of today. But very few people I have known past and present have used coke casually.

How prevalent is drug use in the music scene? Is it as rampant and open as people imagine, or can people who object to it easily avoid it?

I’ve seen firsthand that it can be avoided if you want to bad enough. I’ve seen enough to know that there are musicians who think that the rock star lifestyle is just a given. You play guitar? You trash hotel rooms and snort lines off of groupies’ asses. But there are select few who are in it for the love of music and that’s what they want. To play music.

Band groupies: I used to know a girl who followed a band all over North America. Pretty much every live performance recording available on Youtube for that band can be attributed to her. The band is no longer together and people are grateful (she did all the fans a service). But generally, there isn’t much respect for groupies. What would you say to a young person who wants to “follow the band”?

I guess the question is: why are you following the band? Because you want to be at every single show and be in that moment in the crowd? Or is it because you want recognition from the band or other people? Are you just there to get backstage?

Is there a favourite tour that you’ve been on where everything just went beautifully or is there always a fly in the ointment?

There is no such thing as perfection. That’s what makes life worth living. Wouldn’t you agree?

Indeed. Favourite artists or bands:

Currently? Milky Chance just announced their 2015 tour and I’m excited to get to see them live. Tyler would kill me if I didn’t mention The Badger. I mean, obviously, they’re a given. And I’m always obsessed with A Day to Remember. But don’t ever tell Tyler I said I like that latest Taylor Swift song. If you do then he’ll be really shitty about the entire thing and I’ll have to tell you that I caught him singing One Direction the other day.

My lips are sealed. Thanks for visiting today. 🙂

Maybe-3D-Book-Stack-1Walking toward him is like trudging through the deepest mud, but I hold my head high, my hands in my pockets and strides long. When I’m less than a foot away, his head turns toward me without lifting his chin, and he looks up from under his brows. The white smoke from his cigarette causes his eyes to nearly close before he pulls it from his lips and exhales upward into the air.

I’m struck by how incredibly handsome he is in black wool and new jeans. I want to know if his skin feels hot under his clothes and if his back feels the same when I scratch fingernails across his spine. My fists clench in my coat pockets at the thought. This is going to be so much harder than I’d been prepared for.

I loved it when she laughed because it wasn’t anything fake. Her entire body shook when she giggled, and when it was really funny there was no sound. Right now she was probably calling all the dogs in the alley.

“Yeah, okay. We can do that.” She smoothed out her hair when she’s collected herself, and I realized that I hadn’t noticed it before, but she didn’t wear ponytails anymore. It made me want to tug on the ends, fist it at the back of her neck.

~~SUMMARY~~

Eight-Days-a-Week-3D-Bookstack-2

Gwen Stone has secrets she’s not ready to reveal. After a recent promotion at work, she needs a caretaker for her children. She’s frenzied and in a lurch and pretty much ready to hire the first person who comes along. So she does.

Andrew Lyons needs to get out of his sister’s apartment, and a Craigslist posting may be the answer to his prayers. But what he thought was an ad for a room rental turns into a job offer he can’t refuse. Accepting the nanny position could change his life, if only he had a clue how to be a grownup.

A working mother, a shirtless “manny” who looks good in a towel, two children who need more than a babysitter, and hours of kids’ TV can only spell disaster for everyone involved. Because a manny should always mind his own business. And he definitely shouldn’t fall in love with his boss.

Character Interview: Gwen Stone

Hi, Gwen! Good to meet you.

You too! Thanks so much for having me today.

You have two kids. What are they like?

Id say theyre polar opposites, but theyre more alike than I think they like to admit. Brady has grown exponentially over the last year. Hes much more open and vocal than he used to be. Hes a little joker now. Takes after Andrew in that way, I guess.

Bree, on the other hand, is serious and way too mature for her age. But were working on it.

You have a lot on your plate. Tell us about your average day.

I dont know if theres such a thing as an average day anymore. Im up early to get out the door and go to work where I am slammed all day. But my mind never wanders too far from my family at home. Andrews schedule doesnt allow us to see one another during the day, and he brings the kids home to do homework and chores. I try to be home as early as possible now because I dont want to miss out on anything.

Hiring a nanny for your kids must have been a difficult decision and process.

Truthfully, it was a decision that I knew I would have to make. The promotion and our need for stability was the driving force behind the decision. I was unprepared for the process and I think thats why I decided to hire Drew.

So. Andrew Lyons. What was your first impression of him?

Before I knew he was Ceces brother? I remember thinking that he was really confident. Like he knew he already had the job. Apparently Im really bad at reading people.

It seems like as soon as you knew he was your co-worker’s brother, he was a shoe-in for the job. Were Cece’s stories about him that amusing?

Oh my god. She used to tell me all these stories about the stuff he would do to her when they were younger. I think my favorite story was when she had a sleep over and he snuck into the living room to put a glob of jelly on her face. She woke up and smeared it everywhere. It was probably that level of fun that led me to believe hed be good with Bree and Brady.

And is Andrew everything you’d hoped he’d be?

Hes more than I could have asked for. Had I hired another person wed probably just be going about our days the same as theyd always been. Quiet. Tip toeing around each other.

Is there something a little special about him?

It would be cliché to say everything about him is special, right? He has this way about him that brings out the best in us. Maybe not his sister, though

LOL! I’m glad things are going well for you. Thanks for chatting with us today.

Thank you!

Praise for Eight Days a Week
“Laugh-out-loud story about a guy who goes to look at a room to rent and discovers it comes with a job – that of live-in nanny to two damaged kids. So Andrew Lyons accidentally becomes the “manny”. Written in his POV, this book chronicles his hilarious escapades as he looks after and grows to love Bree and Brady, and his employer, Gwen. His pranks and spot-on observations about kids’ TV shows had me giggling, but there were a few serious moments worthy of a sniffle as well. The star of the show may be Don, though – you’ll just have to read this book to find out about him! Highly recommended.”

SUMMARY

Eight-Days-a-Week-3D-Bookstack-2

Andrew Lyons has been running from responsibility his entire life. Returning home after a couple of years abroad, he finds himself jobless and living in close quarters with a sister he can barely tolerate. At her request, he searches for a job on Craigslist, but finds a room for rent instead. Or so he thinks.

Gwen Stone is in a lurch. With a new promotion at work and two young children at home, she’s in dire need of a caretaker. When Andrew shows up on her doorstep, she thinks he may be exactly what she’s looking for. When she offers him the job, he’s more than interested and she’s confident she’s made the right choice.

It shouldn’t be awkward at all.

But Andrew isn’t exactly forthcoming about his intentions, and Gwen has some secrets she’s unwilling to share. When the mom and the “manny” don’t have a clue what they’re doing, things are bound to get messy.

What do you get with two kids who don’t know how to be kids, a man who never grew up, Beatles Rock Band, and hundreds of hours of kids’ TV? A very interesting job, indeed. But when emotions get in the way, there’s more at stake than just an occupation.

Because life doesn’t have clock-out button. And neither does love.

Release Day Blitz: Beatless by Amber L. Johnson

screenhunter_03-feb-21-17-21Synopsis:

Mallory Durham has been left behind and it is making her feel less like an adult and more like an afterthought.

Divorce, sickness, educational aspirations being shattered, and her Aunt Sam moving into her home, have made Mal’s life nearly unrecognizable to her.

When Tucker Scott re-enters her life along with his band, will they offer what she needs to once again find her voice and self confidence or will it strip her of it even more?

Told through the dual voices of Mallory as she navigates her new world, and Aunt Sam’s letters to her niece, Beatless tells the story of two women at very different points in their life, fighting the same battles; proving that no matter what age a person is, there are always lessons to be learned.

Hannah Where We Fell quote

“Wouldn’t it freak you out if I took my hair off right this second and was like, ‘Oh my god, Oliver, I had cancer too!”

“Don’t lie.  That’s a shitty thing to lie about.”

“Is it?”

I shrug, trying to control my emotions.  “It would explain why you changed your hair, I guess.”

She straightens her spine.  “I guess it would.  Or maybe it makes sense that my mom had cancer.  And lost her hair.  So I dyed my hair and cut about sixteen inches off to donate to her for a wig.  That might make sense, too.”
Hannah Hartwell is weird.  And she’s awkward.  But at this exact moment she is not a liar.
“I might not know what you’re going through first hand, okay? But I know what it’s like to see it from the sidelines.  My mom didn’t even tell me that she was going in for testing.  Didn’t tell me she got a diagnosis.  She just called me on a Wednesday and said she was going in for surgery on Friday, and could I please make sure to pay my phone bill on time this month.  It was like, how did she just go to these appointments without telling anyone?  So blase.  Like you.  It baffles me.”
I’m silent as she talks because I have nothing to say.
“It’s kinda ironic that the woman who leaves an oncologist because he’s ‘married to his job’ ends up getting the one thing he could potentially help her with.”
The room is so quiet that I can hear the music from outside filtering into the house between the window panes and cracks under the doors.  Our food is going to go cold, which bothers me a little, even though I’m no longer hungry.  She did spend a long time cooking it, after all.

Instead of saying anything about her confession, I pick up the ear of corn and start eating.

“This is good,” I say.  And I mean it.

She forces a tight smile and picks at her own plate.

“It’s not ‘cure my cancer’ good.  But it’s good.”

This time, it’s a spoon that she throws at my head.

An Interview with Amber L. Johnson

I first encountered Amber online, when she was writing fan fiction under the pen name of 107yearoldvirgin, and she had a huge following -for good reason. She writes highly-relatable characters, knows how to plot and is blessed with a charming sense of humour. I used to love to escape into her stories, so I’m very pleased to share this interview with you today.

Jess: When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve wanted to be a writer ever since I was little, but I didn’t actually get serious about it until a few years ago.

Jess: You were a prolific fan fiction author when your son was just a baby. In fact, I remember a funny author’s note in which you said that you’d hidden out in your bathroom to get a chapter done. I don’t think I did anything terribly creative when my kids were small. Seriously, how did you manage to accomplish so much?

Back when I had just started it was because I’d been going through some crappy stuff and wanted an outlet. It was cheaper than therapy. When my son was first born, he had colic. He’d cry for upwards of 20 hours a day and was consistently sick from being in daycare. Once he hit ten months he started walking and his colic started going away so he was actually sleeping at night. Because I was used to not sleeping I used the extra hours while he was in bed to write. I’d crank out 2,000 words an hour most times, so I’d write for two or three hours and – bam – a new chapter would go up.

The day I locked myself in the bathroom was a snow day and there were five people in the house – all wanting something. Food or attention (this was before we had my son evaluated and weren’t aware of the extent of his needs). I just needed a break and to be able to sit in the quiet for ten minutes by myself. So I faked a stomach ache and sat on the bathtub to finish a chapter and upload it. Not my proudest moment, but one that makes me chuckle nonetheless!

Jess: Tell me about it! This is how I feel most days:

Motherhood

Jess: I definitely remember those colicky kid moments. And we moms need to take our Mom Time and our laughs wherever we can get them! What is the most valuable lesson that writing fan fiction taught you?

Patience. My editor, Kathie, used to tell me to slow down and stop updating so fast. She said that people would become overwhelmed by the amount I was writing – that I didn’t give them time to appreciate a chapter. Or a story. And it was one of the best lessons I ever learned. Being prolific is one thing but over saturating your readers will make a lot of them simply give up on trying to keep up.

Summary:

Oliver Bishop is having a seriously bad day. With one diagnosis, his life suddenly has an expiration date. Confused about the numbness he has to the idea of it, he unwittingly puts himself directly in the sights of a girl that just may give him a reason to fight – and to live.

Available October 28th on Amazon Kindle.

Jess: What was it about this particular story that made you decide to write it as your first published piece of fiction?

Honestly it was because I felt like it had an important message. I’ve always said that I wanted my first piece to be something I was proud of. Something that really sets the tone as to who I am as a writer. And I think this hits all of my requirements.

Jess: What was your biggest challenge in moving from fan fiction to original fiction?

Fan fiction is still propelled by original ideas, but we have to be honest with ourselves that it’s a lot easier than coming up with our own worlds and characters that people don’t know. If I write a character name in a fan fiction, I don’t even have to describe them. Your mind already knows what they look like. It already knows their back story, even if we give them a new one. Starting from scratch is tough. And it’s even tougher when you think that your old readers won’t be able to see the new characters that you’ve created because they’re so used to reading fan fiction.

Jess: Lots of things must have happened as you developed and published this novella. What came as the biggest surprise to you?

The biggest surprise to me was the outpouring of positive support I received from bloggers and other authors that were willing to take a look at something I’d worked so hard on. I’m my own worst enemy and I was feeling like maybe I didn’t stand a chance – but the feedback I’ve received from everyone has made me think that maybe I’m not as hopeless as I once thought.

Jess: You’re definitely not hopeless, bb. Trust me. Tell us something about your newest release that isn’t in the blurb.

Hannah’s obsession with health through being a vegetarian was inspired by my husband. After I got sick, he watched a bunch of documentaries and we started changing our lifestyle to be more vegetarian and organic. This was my way of honouring him and poking a little fun at the same time.

Jess: Very cool. What’s your preferred climate for writing? Do you like to write in a certain place, with music? Is there a specific time of day that you write?

I can write pretty much anywhere if I’m in a comfortable chair and have music playing. I prefer to be alone so that I can concentrate.

Jess: What comes to you first, the plot or characters?

It always starts with one scene. A conversation will take place between the characters and I lock it into place to write around. The plot usually changes as I write because my characters act of their own volition, no matter how much I try to rein them in.

Jess: Can I possibly talk you into writing a comedy?

I write comedy! It’s just usually comedy about really tragic things.

Jess: LOLOL! Touché. Who has most influenced your own writing?

It sounds weird, but John Hughes has been my biggest inspiration. Probably for my entire life. I actually have to go back through my three new in-progress works to remove mention of him because I talk about him ALL THE TIME.

Jess: I’d better bone up on John Hughes. 😉 In your opinion, what makes a good book?

I love books that suck me in. I need the characters to be believable and to react in real ways to things that are happening. And I want, more than anything, for a book to make me feel.

Jess: I think you’ve always been very talented at doing exactly that. Best of luck with your new novella. I can’t wait to see more from you.

Amber L. Johnson’s novella, Where We Fell, will be available on Amazon Kindle on October 28th.
