Review: Two Wrongs by Donna Alam

Two Wrongs is now live!

“As soon as I finished this book I was ready to start all over. The characters of Ivy and Dylan embedded themselves so deep in my heart and soul.”
“A simply amazing five-star read.”

I do hope you’ll find time to check the pair out. And don’t forget:

RELEASE WEEK SPECIAL: 99c
Also available in KU

Summary:

When Ivy Adams is summoned back to LA by her secret husband, it’s for the purpose of revenge, not a second chance. Estranged as long as they’ve been married, Ivy’s never told anyone she even has a husband, let alone he’s the Scots born movie star, Dylan Duffy.

Yeah, that Dylan Duffy. The sexy-as-sin bad-boy. The man whose rumbling accent has half the world’s panties damp.

But Ivy isn’t the only one keeping secrets, and screwing half of Hollywood hasn’t sated Dylan’s need for revenge. He’s hellbent on making Ivy pay for her mistakes in the most despicable way he can.

Two wrongs don’t make the pair even, but can they ever make their marriage right?

My Review:

One of the things I love about the Trouble by Numbers Series is the authentic Scottish voice. If you loved Rory, you’ll love Dylan twice as hard!

Ivy and Dylan may have married on a whim, with none of her friends or family the wiser, but they had a sweet, loving relationship until outside forces got in the way. Neither was brave enough to communicate their feelings, which allowed poisonous assumptions (you know what they say about assumptions) to come between them. So, Ivy left and Dylan couldn’t understand why.

But now that their divorce papers are on the table, there may just be a chance to talk it out. Or destroy each other. It could go either way.

Always complex, always smoking hot, with a likeable cast of characters and dreamy settings, Donna Alam delivers again with Trouble by Numbers. Five stars.

Donna writes about exotic locations and the men you aren’t married to, but might sometimes wish you were. Escapism reads with heart, humor, and plenty of steam.

Hailing from the North of England, she’s a nomad at heart moving houses and continents more times than she cares to recall. She once worked at a school like the one described in her Pretty Series, where the wheels of her imagination began to turn.

When not bashing away at a keyboard, Donna can usually be found, good book in hand, hiding from her family and responsibilities. She likes her wine and humour dry, and her mojitos and language salty.

Catch up with her on Facebook or send the twit a tweet to keep in touch.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope spring is finally on its way to you, wherever you are!
And don’t forget, Two Wrongs is on sale for release week only.
Also, I’d love to hear what you thought!

Review + Giveaway: Playing Games by Donna Alam

pg fb blog tour banner-903x367-2
MY REVIEW:

There are a lot of games going on in Playing Games: sex games, manipulative mind games, other power games and even a couple of board games. But the biggest games of all are also here: the lies people tell themselves about themselves, to make them feel worthy. The personae they put on at work to maintain respect. And then, there’s the wager of the heart.

As always, Donna Alam writes sophisticated, complicated characters. At first, the reader doesn’t know much about them. Over time, their actions become comprehensible in light of their histories. These characters take risks that most people would balk at. I was worried that some lines would be crossed that would spoil their relationship forever. But they work it out. They are both, admittedly, sexually extroverted, extremely liberal and able to trust each other with their insecurities.

I liked the BDSM. The sadomasochism isn’t graphic enough to be unpalatable. The love scenes are pretty creative. I would have liked to see a couple of the story threads in greater detail. Still, those who enjoy novels with Alpha Males should rate this highly. Four stars from me, for lots of romantic suspense.

“ ‘I find I just want to get to know you.’

‘That’s all?’ Powerful words. Frightening, too.

Almost as though reading her thoughts, Dan added, ‘Of course, I want to fuck you, too.’

‘Of course,’ she added with a smile. ‘What do you propose?’ Louise kept her eyes on the kitchen, not daring to face him, instead watching from the corner of her eyes.

‘Given the choice, I’d like to continue where we left off, with you on all fours.’ His hand found her chin and he turned her to face him. Sliding the hair from her shoulders, he pulled the strands through his fingers where they shone like the sun. ‘Given the opportunity, I’d like to place my hands around your neck, feel your breath under my palm. Given your encouragement, I’d peel you out of your clothes, and slide my fingers through that slick, pink ribbon between your legs.’ His words were a bare whisper, intensity burning and branding her skin. ‘And when you’ve given me everything, and you’re rung wet and shaking, I’d make you come on my tongue.’

She swallowed audibly. It didn’t hide the libidinous lilt in her voice, the longing as she said, ‘So what’s your plan?’

‘Date night.’ His hands cupped her face and then he whispered, ‘Because I’m all about the anticipation.’

‘You mean you’re a tease.’

‘You couldn’t possibly know.’ He smiled once more, his eyes shining with a mixture of design and delight. ‘But you could definitely find out.’

Eclectic reader and part-time perv, Donna is a huge fan of smart men and protagonists with a fair measure of inappropriateness.

SYNOPSIS:

A charming playboy. A girl on the run from love. An exotic location where the weather isn’t the only thing that’s hot.

Kate Saunders is sure of only one thing as her flight to her new life lands in Dubai: short of joining a convent, her new job teaching at a conservative all-female school is just what she needs. Until she meets Kai, that is.

Cultured and worldly, Kai lives a life of wealth and privilege where he always gets what he wants. And what he wants next is Kate. He’s determined their relationship is only going one place: his bed.

The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but it’s also littered with underwear when Kate struggles to resist his sweet, filthy mouth. Talented of tongue he may be, but he’s also not quite who seems to be. Kate’s life is about to take a turn for the complicated, making the one she left behind look easy.

EXCERPT

‘Well, when eight-year-olds make you feel small, heels are the only answer,’ I retort. ‘And I like nice shoes.’

Lazily pushing himself from the door surround, he saunters to my desk set at the front of the room. Almost lounging against it, he stretches his long legs out in front. Each facing the opposite direction, we’re shoulder to shoulder and almost touching as an electrical force dances in the air. I’ve never been more grateful for the curtain of my hair as he leans in, leans closer, then peers exaggeratedly down at my feet, his voice seeming to drop a full octave.

‘You most certainly do.’

Grabbing papers from my desk, I continue shoving them into my bag in an effort to avoid acknowledging the large, hot presence at my side. ‘Is this a social call or are you actually here for something?’ My tone could be described as arsey at best.

‘Pleasure, definitely.’ I think he’s still staring at my shoes, though I’m fairly certain it’s not a covetous thing. ‘I’m here to call in a debt.’

‘Oh?’ Pushing my hair behind my ears, my eyes rise in enquiry. He’s an accountant then?

‘Your rain-check. I’m here to take you for coffee.’

‘Coffee?’

‘That’s correct. A word of two syllables. A social lubricant.’

I swallow, hopefully not audibly. ‘With you?’

‘You’re enthusiasm knows no bounds,’ he replies in a tone as dry as toast.

‘But that’s . . . that’s not a debt.’

‘A promise is most certainly a debt,’ he teases warmly. But there’s something else there in his words, an undercurrent of steel causing goose bumps to break out across my arms. A man who’s unused to being turned down.

‘I didn’t promise.’ Eyes down, I continue my bag filling quest. ‘And I really don’t think it would be a good idea.’

‘The promise was definitely implied.’

‘I think you’ll find it was inferred,’ I reply with a snort. Great. So now I snort.

‘And,’ he adds, ignoring me, ‘you seem far too nice a person to hurt my feelings. As for it being a good idea, how do you know without trying?’

‘I don’t think I need to try you.’ I wish I could swallow the words at once; press rewind, suck them back in.

‘I come with a satisfaction guarantee.’

‘That’s not what I mean,’ I add quickly.

‘Just coffee,’ he replies, now sounding sincere. ‘Nothing nefarious. I promise.’

‘Sorry. Like I said, I’m busy. Flat out.’

‘Interesting choice of words. But busy . . . sharpening . . . copious amounts of pencils?’ Lifting the almost industrial sized electric sharpener out of my hands, he turns it in his own. It’s about then that I notice the almost bare surface of my desk. ‘A serious business, I’m sure.’

As I raise my head, his gaze hits mine, serious eyes staring down. I’ve suddenly run out of words, every beat of my heart pounding so hard, it has to be audible.

Placing the sharpener back, he stands.

‘I’ll even carry your bag.’

‘You’re pretty full of yourself.’

Smiling lopsidedly, his eyes travel the length of my body again. ‘You know what they say, one minute a cock.’

‘And the next just a bit of a dick,’ I mutter.

‘Ouch.’ He laughs softly, rubbing a hand across his delightfully stubbled chin. ‘I believe the aphorism goes, and the next a feather duster . . .’ He sounds almost hurt as his words trail away.

Oh, bugger. So much for not mistaking his intent. ‘I didn’t mean—’

‘To injure my pride?’ His tone matches a perfectly arched brow.

‘No! Of course not. I don’t even know you, I wouldn’t presume—’

‘You can tell me how sorry you are over that drink.’

Not that upset, then. ‘I told you, I can’t. Coffee or otherwise.’

‘Can’t or won’t?’

‘Does it matter?’ I ask, exasperation and my hands rising before me.

‘Boyfriend, girlfriend? Significant other?’

‘Girl? What, because I’m not interested, I’m gay?’ My face burns and all I can think is what says gay about me today? Surely this isn’t the right response.

‘I didn’t say you weren’t interested. Reluctant, but interested,’ he asserts, masking a smile. ‘Are you seeing anyone?’

‘I don’t see what it has to do with you.’

‘Obstacles, Kate,’ he says suddenly serious. Like an egg and spoon race or the one in the sack? No, the one with the sack! ‘I like to know where I stand.’

‘Why should I be interested in where you hang? Stand! I mean stand.’ My eyes flick involuntarily to where they shouldn’t before darting away. Interested, so interested but reluctant, he got that right.

‘To the left, if you feel you must know, and slightly—’

‘Is this how you talk to women you barely know?’ Talk about degeneration.

‘I think you must be a bad influence.’

‘And I think you must be delusional,’ I retort, straightening my blouse.

‘Because I’m back to being a prick, it seems.’

He exhales audibly, ruffling a hand through his gorgeous hair, not that I noticed at all. As he falls silent, I tip my head to peer at him, fascinated by the conflicting emotions playing and fading across his face: exasperation, annoyance and eventually, a hesitant sort of confusion.

‘What have you got to lose?’

Dignity? Pride? Undies?

His hand rises quite suddenly between us as he runs the tip of one finger against my face. He’s so close that for a mad moment, I think he’s going to kiss me, my breath halting as desire, swift and treacherous, blooms inside. He’s going to kiss me and I think I’m going to let him. Then his hand lowers, sort of hesitantly, before plucking one of the humiliatingly many pencils sticking from the top of my bag. He begins to write on my yellow notepad, the only item left on my desk. As pen touches paper, his finger sparkles in the light, sprinkled with glitter.

‘My number,’ he murmurs, placing the folded paper in my hand. ‘Think about it. You owe me for saving you, at least.’

‘Why do I feel you’re not going to leave me alone until I say yes?’ My voice is soft, lacking in strength and conviction as I stare at the folded note.

‘Because you’re a very astute judge of character.’

A smile leaks from his tone as he turns to leave, his words echoing in the empty room. Staring at the paper in my hand, my heart sinks. I fold it once more and tear it in half, because I know his words couldn’t be farther from the truth.

MY REVIEW

Hmm… Why do I get the feeling that this trilogy is going to get pretty hot?

Not kidding. Just look at that cover. This book steams and we haven’t reached the climax yet.

About two years ago, I had the good fortune to be approached by a friend who asked me if I would pre-read a draft of this book. I loved it, and it was great fun corresponding with Donna. I lost track of her for a bit, and the next thing I knew, she was a published author! Yay! And here we are.

One gets the impression that our heroine, Kate has been raised to be a good girl by her overbearing mum. She is betrayed by her fiancé. Her mother is not on her side. Kate, however, is determined to be her own person (wonderfully expressed in typical Aussie fashion). And for these reasons, Kate hares off to the Emirates to become a teacher. Cue Kai.

This young man embodies everything she shouldn’t *cough* do. And oh, boy, Kai is not going to let her shy away from him. Power, prestige and panache, a dry wit and an underlying, sweet vulnerability leave our girl tongue-tied and questioning herself non-stop. Never mind the cultural mores they’re challenging and the fact that he may kind of, sort of be her boss. Of course, he’s determined to secure her affections and throws himself thoroughly into The Woo. Can she resist? Yeah, right. But there’s a lot of mystery to Kais Al Khalfan and Kate hasn’t begun to unlock his secrets.

Have I mentioned… Kai sometimes likes things a little rough? *smack*

Blog Tour & Character Interview: Stone, At Your Service by Rie Warren

Capture Stone cover RieBlurb

Hell on wheels meets hell in high heels.

Bad boy mechanic Josh Stone likes to get his hands dirty any way he can—the filthier, the better. Ever since his wife walked out on him and their young son, he’s only had room in his heart for two loves: the kid and cars.

Roped into playing his best buddy’s gay boyfriend during a romance writers convention, the player meets the girl who’s gonna rock his world. Leelee Songchild. Shy, bashful, beautiful Leelee who blushes at the drop of a hat yet writes hardcore smut to rival Josh’s backlist of Penthouse Forum.

The only problem is his hands are tied. Josh can’t stab his old friend/fake lover in the back even though all he wants to do is take luscious Leelee to bed, and maybe, love her. When the truth comes out, all hell breaks loose.

Too bad romance is just for books.

Character Interview with Josh Stone:

Josh, it’s good to have you here today.

Awesome, Jess. You know I started getting the hang of this blog-type thing at the LitLuv convention. It ain’t so bad being interviewed, as long as it’s not by Jules Gem.

I must admit to being very curious about you. You’re supposed to be a Carolina Bad Boy, who owns a garage, right?

That’s what they say. The bad boy part. Guess I got a bit of a reputation. I do own a garage…passed down from my dad. Now he was one in a million.

Well, despite some of that rough talk and naughtiness, I’ve got to say that I suspect you’re a bit of a softie.

What? Nah. Not me. Don’t be fooled. You know, unless it comes to the kid I guess. My ma, my best buddy, and—shit—well, Leelee could probably talk me into just about anything. She got me to take in that mangy cat of hers, didn’t she?

Yes, she did! And I hear you were talked into something pretty significant. You’re a pretty good friend. Did I hear you pretended to be your best friend’s boyfriend at a romance writers’ convention?

Unfortunately that part is not a rumour. He needed a boyfriend because he’s been pretending to be gay for years. Of course I’d do anything for Nicky including being his bear. We didn’t make a very good couple though.

I must say I agree. That convention sounded absolutely crazy. Are they really like that?

That part is also true. I wish it wasn’t. I can’t remember how many times my ass was groped, my package grabbed, and my rear end got sent out all over Twitter.

And a certain young lady writer caught your eye. Care to tell us about her?

Leelee Songchild. She is one fine woman. She’d have to be to put up with my shit. From the second I saw her, I was a goner. Pretending to be gay didn’t work out so well when all I wanted to do at the convention was jump Leelee’s bones. She’s incredible—talented, sexy, and one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met.

Sounds perfect for you. And what does your little boy think?

The kid is over the moon. He missed his mom so much, you know? It’s good for him, and Leelee’s great with him.

And what have your employees at the garage said about all this?

They haven’t shut the hell up since they found out about her. They think Leelee’s the next best thing since the freakin’ fancy new air compressor I bought. As long as they keep their eyes and hands to themselves I’m fine with it.

You’re a good sport, mister. And pretty secure in your masculinity, too.

You’re not so bad yourself. I’m not too worried what people think about my sexuality or me. I mean, even when I was faking gay, the women still figured me for the top in the relationship.

LOL! The speculation never ends. I’m glad it doesn’t faze you. Thanks for being here!

My pleasure, Jess. Don’t forget to stop by the garage sometime for a free oil change. We got you covered.

She swapped pen for paintbrushes and followed her other love during her twenties. Review: In His Command by Rie Warren

in his command cover final final

Attraction isn’t just dangerous, it’s deadly.

It is the year 2070. Generations ago, the world was annihilated by catastrophic environmental events. The survivors were driven to live in big city centers ruled by the Company. To rebuild the world’s population, the oppressive Company had one rule: all homosexuals must be exterminated.

Commander Caspar Cannon has a stellar military reputation—and a life-threatening secret. When a revolution rips through the territories, Cannon is ordered to escort Company executive Nathaniel Rice to a secure location. For months, the commander has harbored illicit desire for Rice, knowing he cannot act on his attraction. Privileged, polished, and groomed to one day take over the Company, Rice is drawn to the rugged, military man. Yet Rice has his own mysterious agenda, and he knows their love can be as dangerous as the wasteland they must traverse.

Now leaving the besieged city behind, the two men embark on a journey that becomes a minefield of sabotage, betrayal—and forbidden passion. But when danger catches up to them, can Cannon trust the secretive man who holds his heart—and his fate?

My Review:

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I picked it up feeling a bit wary. I don’t read many books with gay characters for one reason: discouragement. Three quarters of the erotic stories I’ve attempted to read are just smut. Where are the love stories?

Of course, I could say that of erotic fiction in general. I’m often asked to review books with flat characters and no plot. No, thanks.

In His Command was entirely different. Yes, it’s an erotica. Prepare for graphic (and educational) love scenes. But that’s just the thing: these are emotionally charged love scenes, written with honesty, grit and moments of softness. There happen to be a lot of these scenes in the book, but I’d have read this series without them.

Caspar and Nathaniel inhabit a dysfunctional world where prejudice reigns. It all started with the culling of people in the 2020s that didn’t fit the mould of a so-called utopia. After that, a plague wiped out almost everyone else. Now, there are four nations that rule humanity with an iron hand, wiping out anyone who lives contrary to their harsh, restrictive beliefs. The implied rules are:

Judge, for ye will be judged.

Do not love one another.

Love not thy spouse as ye love thyself.

To thine own self be false.

Fear thy neighbour.

In the name of preserving life, the leaders have made the world a dystopia. Young people have the survival mandate drummed into them and when they reach maturity, they must prove they can reproduce by copulating with a genetically viable partner. Objectification of the opposite sex is an obvious side effect. Many of these arranged couples –decent people- are terrified to perform, especially in front of officials. This is institutionalized rape.

Anyone who resists risks his or her life.

Anyone who deviates from the norm is scapegoated, castigated and eliminated. It doesn’t stop them from being themselves; the best way to make something (or someone) more attractive is to ban it.

What happens when people are oppressed? Rebellion.

Caspar and Nathaniel are fascinating alpha males. Neither is effeminate. Both make credible warriors. Caspar is a secretly-gay man employed by the anti-gay Company to kill rebels. He lives in a constant state of turmoil. Nathaniel infiltrates the Company in order to destroy it. Of course, when they first meet, neither has any idea that the other is his enemy, and they fall fast and hard.

Allegiances to country, family and friends are all challenged. This is a war that takes no prisoners. The series arc is addictive. This is the first book and it would not work to read the other books out of order. A couple of short stories add to the canon. The second full length novel, On Her Watch, is now available.

I highly recommend this book, not as a piece of gay fiction, but as a work of fiction. Period. Five stars.
