Pucked Off by Helena Hunting

Genre: Contemporary Romance

***A Standalone novel in The Pucked Series***

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance.”

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

Excerpt:

Armed with my clipboard, I walk down the hall to the waiting room. Lance is impossible to miss. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a sweatshirt and the hood is covering half of his face, he’s more than six feet of broad, hockey-playing man.

He’s so wide his shoulders encroach on the chairs on either side, which would explain why no one is sitting next to him. He’s slouched down so his head rests on the back of the chair, and his hands are clasped in his lap, a baseball cap hanging off one knee. His lips, plush and soft—I know since I’ve had them on mine; it might have been a decade ago, but I remember it clearly—are parted. He looks like he’s asleep.

I clear my throat. “Lance Romero?”

He doesn’t move.

Bernadette, the receptionist, gives me a meaningful look.

I clear my throat again and call his name a second time. He jolts awake and the hood falls back, exposing his face. It’s not in good shape. He has a black eye and bruises on his left cheek. There’s a fly bandage across one eyebrow.

Sadly, he’s still hot.

He blinks a few times, yawns, and smacks his lips, his tongue touching the split in the bottom one. His gaze sweeps the room and finally lands on me. Heat explodes in my cheeks and courses through my limbs, warming me from the inside out as he starts at my sneaker-clad feet and roams up over my yoga pants to my company-issued T-shirt before stopping at my face. I can’t look directly at him for more than a couple of seconds. I sincerely hope he doesn’t remember me. I cannot go there and also be professional.

I’m sure the smile he gives me has melted many a panty off a slutty bunny. Mine stay right where they’re supposed to, wedged up my ass.

I force a polite, professional veneer. “I’m ready for you now.”

My Review:

Every time I think one of the books in the Pucked Series is going to be my favourite, Helena tops her own achievements.

Lance Romero has a reputation for being a player on and off the ice, but not everything is as it seems. I honestly was worried that I wouldn’t like this character but he surprised me. He was nothing like I expected and I fell for him. Hard.

Lance has had a hard life and bears some scars. When he meets Poppy, he doesn’t remember her. But she remembers him. He occupies a place in her heart that can’t be overlooked. Poppy is a wonderfully nurturing, kind and patient woman; just what Lance needs.

The content of this book is darker than that of the rest of the series, but there’s something wonderfully healing in the growth of these characters. This book touched my heart in unexpected ways. Five stars.

But I won’t.

Excerpt:

I’ve agreed to go out with Lance. On a date. Two actually. I don’t even know what to think. I grab my purse and slip into my jacket. As fall settles in and the temperature drops, layers are becoming necessary.

When I return, Lance is standing at the desk, checking his phone. He’s smiling.

“Ready to go,” I say.

He hits a couple of buttons, pockets his phone, and turns that grin on me. “Cool.”

I lock up the clinic, and Lance walks me across the lot. This time he doesn’t leave the usual space between us, and the back of his hand grazes my hip.

I’m nervous when we reach my car. His Hummer is parked right behind my Mini this time. I adjust the strap of my purse and look up at him. Strangely, he looks as nervous as me.

He scans my face and takes a small step closer. I can see his hand lifting in my peripheral vision. My hair is in a ponytail, which is sitting on my shoulder. He fingers the end of it.

“Why do I always want to pull this?”

I don’t have the opportunity to answer, because he drops his head and his lips skim my cheek.

“I want to kiss you.”

“You just did,” I whisper.

“I want do it again, but here.” His thumb touches my bottom lip.

“Oh.”

He’s so close. His lips almost touching mine as he asks, “Can I do that?”

“Yes, please.”

His lids grow heavy, and he kisses the corner of my mouth. Lance strokes my cheek and rests his palm on the side of my neck. The other hand skims the length of my arm until he reaches my fingertips.

He leans back a little, and for a second I think it’s over before it’s even begun, but he takes my hand in his. Uncurling my fingers, he lifts it and presses my palm against his cheek. A full-body tremor runs through him, and his eyes drift closed. He turns his head toward my palm, and I smooth my thumb along the contour of his bottom lip. A deep sound comes from the back of his throat, making my skin prickle and heat blossom in my belly.

When he opens his eyes again, the fire in them matches the heat flooding my entire body. “Can you keep yer hand right here?”

“If you want me to, yes.”

“I definitely do.”

He leans in and brushes his lips over mine again. It’s soft and warm. The next time he takes my bottom lip between his, he releases it slowly, and then does the same with the top one. When his tongue flicks out, I might whimper. Light fingers cup my head, and I tilt it back farther.

I part my lips, and his tongue sweeps my mouth. His groan is low, sending a shiver down my spine. He drops the hand that’s keeping mine pressed against his cheek. His arm winds around my waist, and he pulls me in tight against him.

I expect the kiss to grow in intensity. It doesn’t, though I can feel the heat building inside me. That feeling I’ve been searching for all these years is finally back.

Review: Good Boy by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

Summary:

Hosting her brother’s wedding for an MVP guest list is the challenge of Jess Canning’s life. Already the family screw-up, she can’t afford to fail. And nobody (nobody!) can learn of the colossal mistake she made with the best man during a weak moment last spring. It was wrong, and there will not be a repeat. Absolutely not. Even if he is the sexiest thing on two legs.

Blake Riley sees the wedding as fate’s gift to him. Jess is the maid of honor and he’s the best man? Let the games begin. So what if he’s facing a little (fine, a lot) of resistance? He just needs to convince the stubborn blonde that he’s really a good boy with a bad rap. Luckily, every professional hockey player knows that you’ve got to make an effort if you want to score.

But Jess has more pressing issues to deal with than sexy-times with a giant man-child. Such as: Will the ceremony start on time, even though someone got grandma drunk? Does glitter ever belong at a wedding? And is it wrong to murder the best man?

Caution: May cause accidental aspiration of tea or coffee. Do not read in a public place where loud laughter is inappropriate. Contains hot but hilarious hockey players, puppy cuddling and a snarky pair of underwear

My Review:

Hockey, hilarity and dogs. Just look at these covers. What’s not to love?

I guarantee you’re going to enjoy this story. Jess Canning just wants a little respect. She never expected to get it from Blake Riley. And oh boy, I love this guy. I’ve already read this book three times. The only thing I could wish is that it be longer. But the sequel is coming and I can’t wait. Five stars.

Summary:

Lily LeBlanc isn’t versed in the art of casual sex, but after seven years in an on-again, off-again relationship, she’s definitely willing to give it a shot. And who better to try it with than her best friend’s boyfriend’s best friend? What could possibly go wrong?

NHL player, Randy Ballistic, lives up to his last name on the ice and in the bedroom. His best friend and teammate has recently given up the puck bunnies and traded them in for a real girlfriend. And she just happens to have a seriously feisty, extra-hot best friend on the rebound. Randy’s more than happy to be Lily’s spring board back into the dating scene.

But casual sex is only casual until those pesky things called emotions get involved. Once that happens, someone’s bound to get pucked over.

My Review:

Based on my assessment of these two characters in the previous two books, I wasn’t sure I was going to like them at all. Turns out, these are two of my favourite Pucked characters.

Randy Ballistic has a reputation for being a hockey manwhore, but right at the beginning of this story, he displays gentlemanly behaviour that I wouldn’t have expected of him. One of the things he hates is to see a woman cry and he’s all about preventing that –or solving it once it’s happened.

He defends Lily LeBlanc when her boyfriend demeans her. Lily sends the boyfriend packing and pretty soon, her every thought is consumed by Randy. It’s reciprocal. Unfortunately, they’re both scared to commit.

Emotions happen whether one wants them to or not. So, what happens when a casual relationship is no longer casual?

One thing I really enjoyed about this book is that the characters’ insecurities are founded on the way people have treated them rather than on vague fears. Both characters believe they aren’t fit to be together in a lasting way. And yet together, they’re stronger, better people than they were on their own.

Randy rates about equal to Alex on my swoon meter, for various reasons. Randy is less domineering than Alex, which I liked. He’s quiet and intense. Think Tall, Dark and Broody with tatts and a beard. Alex is assertive and intense. Think Norseman with piercing blue eyes and a hockey stick. Yeah. You want the books now, right?

I definitely love Lily the best out of all the female characters in this series. She’s funny, awkward and brave enough to set aside her habits and try something spontaneous.

Five stars for another fun read from Helena Hunting. I’m ready to read the next one, Forever Pucked.

Review: Pucked Up by Helena Hunting

Yeti teaser

SUMMARY:

Miller “Buck” Butterson has been banging his way through life ever since a puck to the face fixed his messed up front teeth. After five years in the NHL, deflecting goals on the ice and scoring them with puck bunnies, Miller has decided he’s ready for a girlfriend. A real, non-bunny girlfriend to take on dates, and not jump into bed with after five seconds of conversation.

Miller thinks he’s found that woman in his teammate’s sister. Except, unlike team captain and all-around nice guy Alex Waters—who happens to date his stepsister, Miller’s media reputation as a manwhore is well earned. Beyond that minor detail, Miller doesn’t know the first thing about relationships or the time and effort they require.

Miller learns—eventually—that if he wants to make Sunshine “Sunny” Waters fall for him, he’s going to have to do a whole lot more than show her his stick skills in the bedroom.

MY REVIEW:

Another solidly funny read from Helena Hunting!

I didn’t expect to fall in love with Miller. I TOTALLY fell in love with Miller. Even if he is hairy. He’s a tad gormless in the dating department, and the planning department, and at making it onto planes on time, but his heart is solid gold. If I were 25 years younger…

Miller wants a serious relationship. He might be a fish in dry water, but he definitely tries. The girl he has set his heart on finds him quite trying at times.

Sunny is a good girl. Pretty much everyone she knows doesn’t want her to date Miller. And that is problematic since she doesn’t trust him (or herself) enough to tell the advice-givers to take a hike.

She’s the type of girl who saves the whales and the puppies and indulges in healthy activities and eats organic vegan food. She’s a pretty wonderful girl. Except, well, that little bit about her hanging out with an ex-boyfriend who’s much more attuned to her lifestyle. Who wants her back. Heh.

Honestly? Sunny is young and I don’t see Miller as her forever. I like her. But not with Miller. Aside from sports, Miller adores bacon, pizza and endless supplies of barbecued wings. I see a diet war in their future.

Miller? There’s this girl named Poppy. You’ve met her. She’s a hockey fan and she’s not a bunny either. I know you want a permanent commitment with someone who has a level head. Try going for somebody who at least knows your lingo.

Sunny? For the 50th time, they’re not called Bunny Hookers.

I am taking up matchmaking in my fictional life. I am so looking forward to the character Randy’s book. And I hope Sunny and Miller will be in the background, bickering about chicken bones on the counter.

Call me a romantic.

Four stars for being laugh-out-loud funny, while keeping those endearing, thought-provoking moments. Look for Pucked Over in 2016.

Review: The Mistake by Elle Kennedy

The Mistake Amazon

He’s a player in more ways than one…

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hook-ups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he’ll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he’s worth a second chance.

Now he’s going to need to up his game…

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She’s not a charity case, and she’s not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He’ll have to work for it. This time around, she’ll be the one in the driver’s seat…and she plans on driving him wild.

MY REVIEW:

I love going to hockey games, but I prefer home-grown teams over the NHL. Maybe that’s why I love Elle Kennedy’s college-level hockey players so much.

John Logan wants everyone to assume he is what he seems. He fools around with the campus puck bunnies and hangs out with the guys from his team. As far as his friends are concerned, Logan’s path is simple: make the grades, get the girls, and do whatever is necessary to go pro. Logan goes through all the motions, but in reality, his future is not clear cut. What he wants differs from everyone’s expectations.

Logan is lonely. He carries heavy burdens that none of his friends know about. Grief is a constant in his life. And then, he meets Grace.

Grace is inexperienced but open to learn, tends to ramble when nervous, knows nothing about hockey but loves guy flicks and football. She’s nothing like the girls Logan usually meets and it takes Logan a while to get his head out of his… you know.

Some of the best things about this book: guys who talk and think like guys; natural situations and dialogue; realism concerning what it’s like to parent your parent; and facing road blocks to dreams. I enjoyed watching this couple tackle their challenges, even though I wanted to smack them upside the head upon occasion.

Oh. The quest Grace sets for Logan? Priceless. Five stars.

Review: The Deal by Elle Kennedy

TheDeal Amazon Elle

Summary:

THE DEAL

Off-Campus Book #1

Elle Kennedy

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

MY REVIEW:

One of the best things about this book is that Garrett is not some dumb jock. In fact, he has an A average and is having difficulty with one particular course. So, he begs Hannah –one of the few students in the class who’s managing to get good marks- to help him out. She is underwhelmed by his attitude. Somehow, she relents and agrees to tutor “the jerk”. But it comes out that he isn’t such a jerk. I totally loved that.

The other thing I truly love about this book is the dialogue. Some sports novels use the lingo particular to the sport, but it feels stilted. All sorts of hockey-based expressions are used here, but the dialogue is smooth and natural. Beautifully done. Also, Garrett really sounds like a guy. I’ll be eagerly anticipating the next book in this series. Five stars.

QUOTES:

“Hannah and Garrett are funny, relatable, and their chemistry on the page is palpable enough to linger off of it. The Deal reminds me of all the reasons I love romance. Two capable, yet flawed people realize that living without the other is worse than anything else life can throw at them. I highly recommend it to fans of Easy by Tammara Webber or The Hook Up by Kristen Callihan. It’ll make you laugh, maybe even tear up, but most of all leave you with that warm good book feeling at the end.”
– Jane Litte, Dear Author

Elle Kennedy engages your senses from the very first sentence! Both deliciously steamy and heart-achingly tender, the Deal is an absolute winner!

EXCERPT:

Thirty minutes before my shift ends, I find Garrett Graham in one of my booths.

Seriously.

Does this guy ever give up?

I have no desire to go over there and serve him, but I don’t have much of a choice. Lisa, the other waitress on duty, is busy tending to a group of faculty members at a table across the room, and my boss Della is behind the baby-blue Formica counter dishing out slices of pecan pie to three freshman girls sitting on the tall swivel stools.

I set my jaw and march up to Garrett, making my displeasure obvious as I meet his
twinkling gray eyes. He runs a hand through his cropped dark hair and flashes a lopsided grin.

“Hey there, Hannah. Fancy meeting you here.”

“Yeah, fancy,” I mutter, yanking my order pad out of my apron pocket. “What can I get you?”

“A tutor.”

“Sorry, that’s not on the menu.” I smile sweetly. “We serve really good pecan pie, though.”

“You know what I did last night?” he says without acknowledging the sarcasm.

“Yep. You were text stalking me.”

He rolls his eyes. “Before that, I mean.”

I pretend to think it over. “Um…you hooked up with a cheerleader? No, you hooked up with the girls’ hockey team. No, wait, they’re probably not ditzy enough for you. I stick with my original guess—cheerleader.”

“Sorority sister, actually,” he says smugly. “But I’m talking about what I did before that.” He raises one dark eyebrow. “But I’m very intrigued by your interest in my sex life. I can give you details about that another time if you want.”

“I don’t.”

“Another time,” he echoes in a dismissive tone, folding his hands on the blue-and-white-checkered tablecloth. He’s got big hands with long fingers, short nails, and knuckles that are slightly red and cracked. I wonder if he’s been in a fight recently, but then I realize the busted-up knuckles are probably a hockey player thing.

“I was at study group yesterday,” he informs me. “There were eight other people there, and you know what the highest mark in the group was?” He blurts out the answer before I can hazard a guess. “C-plus. And our combined average was a D. How am I supposed to pass this makeup if I’m studying with people who are as dumb as I am? I need you, Wellsy.”

Wellsy? Is that a nickname? And how on earth does he know that my last name is Wells?

I never told—argh. Damn sign-up sheet.

Garrett notices my surprised look and cocks his brows again. “I learned a lot about you in study group. Got your number, your full name, even found out where you work.”

“Congratulations, you really are a stalker.”

“Nope, just thorough. I like to know what I’m up against.”

“Jesus Harold Christ! I’m not tutoring you, okay? Go bug somebody else.” I point at the menu in front of him. “Are you ordering? Because if not, then please go away and let me do my job in peace.”

“Jesus Harold Christ?” Garrett snickers before picking up the laminated menu and giving it a cursory glance. “I’ll have a turkey club.” He sets the menu down, then reaches for it again.

“And a bacon double cheeseburger. Just the burger, no fries. Actually, I changed my mind—yes to the fries. Oh, and a side order of onion rings.”

My jaw almost hits the floor. “You’re seriously going to eat all that?”

He grins. “Of course. I’m a growing boy.”

Boy? Nuh-uh. I’m only noticing it now—probably because I’ve been too distracted by
how insufferable he is—but Garrett Graham is all man. There’s nothing boyish about him, not his chiseled good looks or his tall frame or that ripped chest of his, which suddenly flashes to mind as I remember the picture he sent me.

“I’ll also take a slice of that pecan pie and a Dr. Pepper to drink. Oh, and some tutoring.”

“Not on the menu,” I say cheerfully. “But the rest is coming right up.”

Before he can argue, I abandon his booth and head to the back counter to place his order with Julio, our night cook. A nanosecond later, Lisa rushes over and addresses me in a hushed voice. “Oh my God. You know who that is, right?”

“Yep.”

“It’s Garrett Graham.”

“I know,” I answer dryly. “That’s why I said yep.”

Lisa looks outraged. “What is wrong with you? Why aren’t you freaking out right now? Garrett Graham is sitting in your booth. He talked to you.”

“Holy shit, he did? I mean, his lips were moving, but I didn’t realize he was talking.”

I roll my eyes and walk over to the drink station to pour Garrett’s drink. I don’t look his way, but I can feel those smoky gray eyes following my every movement. He’s probably sending telepathic orders for me to tutor him. Well, too bad for him. There’s no way I’m wasting the little spare time I have on a college hockey player who thinks he’s a rock star.

Lisa trails after me, oblivious to my sarcasm and still gushing about Graham. “He’s so gorgeous. Like unbelievably gorgeous.” Her voice lowers to a whisper. “And I hear he’s amazing in bed.”

I snort. “He probably started that rumor himself.”

“No, Samantha Richardson told me. She hooked up with him last year at the Theta
kegger. Said it was the best sex of her life.”

I have no response, because I couldn’t care less about the sex life of some girl I don’t
even know. Instead, I shrug and hold out the Dr. Pepper. “You know what? Why don’t you take his booth?”

The way Lisa gasps, you’d think I just handed her a check for five million dollars. “Are you sure?”

“Yep. He’s all yours.”

“Oh my God.” She takes a step forward as if she’s going to hug me, but then her gaze
darts to Garrett and she appears to have second thoughts about broadcasting her terribly unwarranted joy. “I owe you so big for this, Han.”

I want to tell her that she’s actually doing me the favor, but she’s already dashing toward the booth to wait on her prince. I watch in amusement as Garrett’s expression clouds over at Lisa’s approach. He picks up the glass she sets in front of him, then meets my gaze and slants his head. As if to say, you’re not getting rid of me that easily.
