Evan Arden Series

Evan Arden isn’t your average hero.  In fact, he’s as damaged as they come.  A former Marine sniper suffering from PTSD, Evan battles his inner demons throughout his life as a hit man for the top Chicago mafia boss, Rinaldo Moretti.

Take a journey into the mind of a broken man as he tries to keep hold on his slender grasp of sanity, get his job done without getting killed, and maybe find a little peace in his life. As his mental state slowly degrades and his paranoia increases, Evan is unable to control his own actions.

From the Arizona desert to the streets of Chicago, The Evan Arden Series will constantly keep you on your toes. Evan is ruthless and merciless in all his relationships, and no one is safe as he begins to breakdown.

This action-packed series starts with the novella Otherwise Alone.  Evan is hiding away in an Arizona cabin with only his faithful dog , Odin, for company when he find Lia Antonio stumbling around, lost in the desert.  To say Lia hits it off with this hit man is an understatement, but as hot as their brief encounter may be, Evan knows he’s not the kind of guy she wants to pursue.

Back in Chicago, it’s back to the “normal” life of a killer for organized crime as Evan’s story continues in Otherwise Occupied.  He does everything he can to occupy himself and keep away thoughts of the beautiful woman he met in Arizona, but nothing seems to work.

Evan is ruthless and merciless in all his relationships.  Unable to sleep with wartime nightmares in his head, Evan turns to a prostitute to help him sleep at night.  As his mental state slowly degrades and his paranoia increases, Evan is unable to control his own actions.

No one is safe.

In Otherwise Unharmed, Evan makes a deal with federal agents for his release from prison, and he’s tossed into the beginnings of an all-out war between mafia families in Chicago.  No one can know his true loyalties if he has any chance of keeping those he cares about alive.

He knows if he is to have any chance at life with Lia, he has to get out of the business, but who retires from the mafia?

In his efforts to make things right, Evan crosses the wrong man and finds himself on the business end of the crosshairs.  With his acute perception and intelligence, he tries to stay a step ahead of his former co-workers, but this time, it isn’t just his own life on the line – he’s got to protect Lia from the man who once called him son.

Evan Arden isn’t your average hero. In fact, he’s as damaged as they come. A former Marine sniper suffering from PTSD, Evan battles his inner demons throughout his life as a hit man for the top Chicago mafia boss, Rinaldo Moretti.

From originally meeting Lia in the Arizona desert back to the streets of Chicago, The Evan Arden Trilogy will constantly keep you on your toes. Evan is ruthless and merciless in all his relationships, and no one is safe as he begins to breakdown.

Take a journey into the mind of a broken man as he tries to keep hold on his slender grasp of sanity and save the woman he loves.

Excerpt from Otherwise Alone

“Kiss me.” My voice sounds raspy to me, like my throat is dry and full of sand. I watch her eyes get wide for a moment, flickering quickly between my eyes and my mouth. As much as I want to lean forward and just take her mouth with mine, I stop myself from doing so. Letting her take the lead – at least for now – is important.

Soon, though…soon I’ll be in control. Once she’s decided she really wants it, I’m fucking taking over because that’s what she really needs.

“Go on,” I say with my eyes locked on hers. “You want to.”

“I do?”

“And how do you know that?” Her tone is somewhat defiant but not enough. She might not want to want it, but she does.

“I’m a very good judge of character,” I inform her.

“You are, huh?” She cocks her head to one side and looks up at me. Her eyes are dilated even more now, and I know she’s just trying to think her way out of it.

“Stop stalling.” My fingers grip her side a little to pull her minutely closer. Just a touch of encouragement, which seems to be all she needs.

My eyes stay on her as she moves slightly closer. She hesitates one last second before her lips tentatively touch mine. I’m not having any of that, though. She’s opened the door, and it might as well be a pair of those gigantic wooden double-doors that grace the front of some huge Bavarian castle because I’m coming in.

I grab the back of her head with my hand and pull her to me, opening my mouth and finding her tongue with my own. She groans against my lips, and I tilt my head to one side to get a better angle. She tastes sweet, like the peaches we had with our dinner, and I want to devour her.

There is nothing soft or gentle about what I do. I want her, and I can sense the desire inside of her. She’s not looking for a brief make-out session. Whatever happened with whomever she was with pushed her to this. She wants to be fucked, and I am happy to oblige. My hands grab at her, and my fingers dig into her flesh a little.

My tongue dances with hers.

Maybe more like a mosh pit than dancing, but whatever.

I slide my hand down her back and pull her body flush against mine. My cock is peeking out between the opening of my boxers, and I grind against her stomach. I need to get her shirt off of her as quickly as possible. And her jeans. And everything else.

I need to be inside of her. Mouth, pussy, ass – I don’t care. I just need to merge with her…blend…be one…

Interview with Debra Anastasia: Poughkeepsie Begins

It ends with the beginning. This legendary,
indie, cult-favorite series ends its tale with the story of the Poughkeepsie
brotherhood before the tattoo. Before the train station, before the church,
before a criminal empire there was a foster home and three teen boys who chose
each other as family, because the ones they were born into didn’t exist.
Still in high school, Beckett is already laying the groundwork for a grander
life ahead, one where his brothers want for nothing and get some respect for
once. But even as he plans, Beckett must decide if he’s ready to make that
choice—diving in to a life that trades his chance at a future, his chance at
something as simple as first love with a girl named Candy Cox, for their chance
to find happiness.Blake, Beckett, and Cole’s devotion to each other is forged by fists and the
driving need to belong somewhere, to do more than just survive this life.
Readers of the series know they each get there in the end, but before we count
smiles, we must first shed tears. These early days of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood
will play on your heartstrings before serrating them with a knife; they’ll lift
your soul with music, only to leave you with nothing but a desperate prayer for
hope. And when you reach the end of the beginning, you’ll be ready to start the
series all over again.

When she ducked under the bleachers, he was a dick, right off the bat. His buzz was
wearing off, but he was still high and broken at the closeness of her. “You’re
missing your boyfriend during his lawn ballet.” He assumed a stance—douche
mixed with confrontational—that he knew stopped people. It set up his walls
real nice. With everyone.
Everyone but her. She walked right up to him. She pushed him hard once, twice, until his
back hit one of the supports. And then she slapped him.
He took the slap and rolled his eyes. “That all you got for me, pink princess?”
And then she was kissing him. Oh, God. Kissing him and palming him with the same
ferociousness he felt. He grabbed the metal behind him to keep from attacking
her and nailing her right on the concrete floor littered with cigarettes and
chip bags.
She pulled away and slapped him again, growling, “Fuck you, Beckett Taylor. Don’t
you ever do that to me again. I’m worth more than that, and you know it.” She
stepped back, leaving cold space and his heated erection between them.
He swallowed, his pounding heart trying to beat some common sense into his brain
again. It wasn’t working. He let go of the bleachers and advanced. “You have
some fucking nerve. You’re the one up there prom-queening it with goddamn
She stood her ground as he came at her. And he knew he was intimidating. Shit,
full-grown men stepped aside when he was coming. But Candy raised her chin. He
was amazed at the fight in her, right there. He pulled her into a dip, just
like fucking Pyler had, except he did it like a man who wanted a woman and knew
what to do with her body. Candy needed to push him away; she needed to turn her
Instead she groaned and bit his bottom lip hard enough to draw blood. He put his hand
between her legs and dragged it up to her breast, squeezing hard so she would
feel it through her coat. She sunk her nails into the skin at his neck. She was
a buried treasure. He was sure as fuck no one knew about this side of her. Only
he could get her panting like she was. He spanked her bottom once.
“Ow.” She was shocked.
He stopped kissing and looked her in the face as he spanked her again, more
forcefully this time.
Her “Ow” was quieter, and the hunger in her eyes far deeper than her years.
Again he spanked her. And this time she purred. Fucking purred. He began slow,
circular caresses over the denim that covered her ass. He was desperate to see
the red imprints from his hand.
“Fuck it.” Beckett picked her up and set her back against the metal support he’d
tried to cling to before.
They weren’t alone. Red tips of cigarettes glowed, gentle murmurs of illicit
behavior could be heard if you knew how to listen for trouble. Still, he held
her against the pole and mimicked the motions he was desperate to do with her.
He dropped his mouth to the zipper on her coat, which kept her safe from all
his intentions. He used his teeth to pull it down to her cleavage. He buried
his face, licking and nuzzling her sweet-smelling neck. He used his chin to
move material so he could access more of her chest. She smelled like goddamn
candy. His dick could pack gunpowder in a cannon it was so fucking hard.
After a moment, the murmurs added up. Too many. He glanced around and noticed the
cigarettes being stubbed out. He let his prize slide down the metal gently. He
leaned down to kiss her lips, then her forehead, right under the edge of her
fuzzy hat before whispering, “Go. Cops are here. Go.”
And then Candy, sweet-smelling, homework-doing Candy, stuck her hand in his
jacket’s hidden pocket and took the gun out. He pulled her hands and his gun
close to make sure the safety was on before letting her tuck it into her bra.
“Anything else?” she asked.
And then he slipped the rest of the merchandise in his left pocket into her right
one. She turned and left.
“And don’t you ever talk to me again, Taylor. I have a boyfriend!” She stormed away
as the resource officer stepped up next to him.
“You have a way with the ladies, son.”
“I’m not your son.”
“That’s the truth right there. ’Cause if you were, you’d be on that field kicking
footballs instead of selling at my school.”
When Beckett was let off with a warning due to lack of evidence, his one thought was
of her. Candy was so perfect for him it hurt.
My Review:

Today, I have been granted the honour of interviewing Debra. I had so many questions to ask her that I may have to ask to host her again.

I’ve loved this series for a long time now. This book brought everything together for me. There’s an intricate plot but the whole shebang is character-driven and I learned a ton in this instalment about the boys. I finally understand Cole and have a much deeper respect for him now. He’s far more damaged than the others. Blake should be scary, he’s delusional. But instead, he’s somehow the solid one. The one who holds the others up. That’s some brilliant writing, there. And Beckett? This kid should have gone to college to be some kind of counselor. He has the biggest heart. Instead, to rescue his brothers, he chooses the only way out that he can see.

We also meet a new character: Candy. Based on her name, I made assumptions about her. That was silly. She’s strong, worthy of respect and has a great relationship with her parents. Could there be more story here?

To be honest, I expected this book to be depressing. It isn’t. Each boy has sunny pockets from his childhood where someone loved him. All of them have a solid capacity to nurture others and they do that whenever given the opportunity. Had their shared foster home not been abusive, all three might have become very different men.

I was glad to notice that in the last book, Saving Poughkeepsie, there’s one plot thread that wasn’t tied off. It gives me hope that there still might be room for another story someday. I’ll look forward to that day. Five stars.

Sorry, I just need a better look at this gorgeous cover.

Now I’m happy. Let’s get on with the interview!

Can you remember the moment when you realized you were a writer? I think I was always interested in telling stories. The members of my family love to retell beloved family stories around the dinner table. I tried my hand at writing and I kept putting down what I thought people wanted to hear. Once I started typing what I wanted to say? That’s when I became a writer.

How did the idea for this series germinate? I was in the shower thinking about role models for girls and how a lot of my favorite stories had rich heroes. I wanted to showcase a love that didn’t need any material possessions as well. So I went to extremes and Blake was created.

Which of the boys spoke to you first? Blake. And his cardboard piano.

Have any of the characters evolved in a way that surprised you? I think they all did except for Blake. His circumstances changed, but he had remained true to himself. I feel like he came to us full developed in his character. But he did learn how to live with his anxiety attacks, and that was a huge step.

Is there a question you’ve always wanted to be asked that nobody’s asked? Will you answer it? I think I get asked some really great stuff! (See above interview!) I have the most intelligent, heartfelt readers and blogger friends, they always surprise me with interesting things.

Thanks so much for being here today! Thank you! <3

“There are just not enough words to describe how great I thought this book was! I completed it in one sitting, refused sleep till I was finished.
A psychotic killer is abducting women, holding them hostage for days and days while raping and torturing and killing in a most horrendous way. Except you know this by reading the back of the book. What you dont know is the story inside…there is so much more.”

Review: Songbird by Sydney Logan

Songbird ebook

One bridesmaid. One groomsman. One classic wedding hookup. But for Callie and Devin, their weekend of passion is anything but typical. Callie Franklin doesn’t do one night stands. Ever. She’s far too responsible and focused on her career to ever let herself give in to temptation. But, on the eve of her best friend’s wedding, she meets that temptation . . . And his name is Devin McAllister.

Devin, on the other hand, has no problem with meaningless hookups. The very last thing he needs—or wants—is a relationship. Relationships come with strings. Relationships come with heartbreak. A late-night encounter in the hotel’s piano bar finds the two unable to resist each other. With her angelic voice and bright blue eyes, Devin’s sure he’s never met anyone as beautiful as his Songbird. Six weeks later, when two pink lines confirm Callie’s worst fears, she and Devin have to face the consequences of their wild weekend. And they have to deal with each other—whether they like it or not. With a love story that’s far from traditional, Callie and Devin begin to wonder if their one-night stand could turn into something neither of them anticipated. A happily ever after.

My Review:

I was excited to hear Songbird would be published as in its previous incarnation it was one of my fan favourites. And I love it more now than ever.

The characters and the plot in this book aren’t clichéd. You might suppose they would be, and then our crafty storyteller turns it around on you.

Callie and Devin are members of a wedding party. Neither one of them is enjoying the experience. In fact, they’d prefer all the pre-wedding hoopla to be over. Can’t they just get on with the main event?

Of course, they haven’t met yet and haven’t exchanged names.

Callie doesn’t have flings. Devin doesn’t do relationships. But he throws that idea out the window when he finds the attractive woman playing the piano in the hotel bar late at night.

Taking the advice of friends that she should live it up more often, Callie accepts Devin’s proposition, never dreaming that she’ll see him the next morning at the wedding brunch. Talk about awkward.

Devin realizes that he’d entertain having a serious relationship with Callie. She shuts him down. Little do they know that their lives have already changed irrevocably.

It’s really fun to watch them build a relationship backward, particularly as all their friends and his family weigh in. Her family is not so much fun. However, his mother is an absolute delight. I would like to have that woman for a friend. She’s a force of nature.

One can always count on Sydney Logan for a top notch read. Five stars.

Review: Pretty Things by Donna Alam

12036925_1500174700307446_7378958230430629585_n Pretty trilogy

If a little trouble only makes for a good time, Kate and Kai should be having a blast . . .

Kate Saunders didn’t believe in happy endings, especially after finding her fiancé between another woman’s thighs. When she met Kai, she was sure he’d be nothing more than a hot one night stand. Charismatic, dominant and dirty, Kai wasn’t supposed to be her Prince Charming; maybe just her Mr Right Now. Against her better instincts, she’d fallen in love.

Kai makes a little wrong look a whole lot of right, but he’s learning that good looks, charm and a talented tongue don’t always get you what you want. Wealth, privilege and family are sometimes their own bonds. It’s not a forbidden love, but it’s a troubled one. One that might force Kai to reveal his not so pretty side . . .

Join Kate and Kai in Australia as they embark on the final leg of their journey in the heart-pounding, seat squirming, and hilarious conclusion to the trilogy. Lies, secrets, and shocking truths will be revealed as they discover the destination isn’t always the most important part of the journey. Sometimes the best bits are just where you get off.

deccfa4e-6f1b-419c-900e-601c2504a7d0 Pretty Things cover

My Review:

At last, we have the final installment of the Pretty Trilogy in our hot little hands. Note that this is one trilogy you must read in order. When we left Kate and Kai in the last book, he had chased her after she fled home to Australia believing he had cheated. His declaration and proposal were gut wrenching (and made me fall for him 100 percent). But these are flawed people and in Pretty Things a lot of unexpected stress gets thrown into the mix.

Kate has grown up feeling that she’s never quite good enough to please her mum and stepfather. Although not the most secure person, negative experiences prompt her to be adventurous rather than reclusive. She has a killer wit, a pretty level head, and won’t let anyone mistreat her. I love this heroine. Sometimes, she leaps to conclusions and a lack of information leads her to preemptively protect herself (hence the retreat to Australia during Pretty Liar). And that’s one of the cool things about Kai: he doesn’t just throw in the towel. He stretches himself to enter new territory and communicate.

Open communication is not Kai’s forté. He’s accustomed to keeping his personal life private, especially from his manipulative, domineering father, Faris, who is happy to stage scenes to get Kai into trouble. Faris wants Kai to marry advantageously. Who cares about love? He does his best to wreak havoc on Kai’s relationship with Kate, and nearly succeeds.

Between outsmarting Faris’ conniving plan to marry him off, and securing his future with Kate, Kai needs some ulcer medication. At the start of the story, he behaves poorly. Perfect love casts out fear and at the start of the story, Kai is a legitimately anxious man. Fortunately, he does snap out of it.

Kai must learn to surrender control and let Kate in. Funnily enough, she also has to learn to trust by submitting to his wishes. Both, in their own ways, possess alpha personalities. Trust only happens when partners make themselves vulnerable.

12065506_1625228674393178_1646058933479471753_n Pretty Kai quote

The supporting characters in this book are marvelous, per usual. Niamh could easily support her own trilogy. A novella written in the point of view of the horrible housekeeper would be top of my Buy List (I woke my family laughing about her). And wow, I really want to get inside Faris’ head. How did he become this person? Can he be redeemed?

I want more of this universe. Beautifully written, chock full of exotic locales, blisteringly funny and pretty steamy. The Bondage-Discipline Dominance-Submission doesn’t feel contrived. I find it pleasing that the focus is not on Masochism or humiliation. Plus, there are a lot of vanilla moments, they don’t just flit from scene to scene. This couple is high energy, mutually demanding, sexually adventurous, emotionally vulnerable, affectionate, smitten and focused on the long haul. One of my favourite couples in modern fiction. Five stars.

8395750 Donna AlamDonna Alam writes about exotic locations and the men you aren’t married to, but wish you were. Escapism reads with heart and humour and, of course, plenty of steam.

Hailing from the North of England, she’s a nomad at heart moving houses and continents more times than she cares to recall. She once worked at a school like the one described in her Pretty Trilogy. Alas, there were no handsome male protagonists hanging around there.

Eclectic reader and part-time perv, she’s a huge fan of smart men, as well as protagonists with a fair measure of inappropriateness.

What he wants he gets…

Knox Masters is a quarterback’s worst nightmare. Warrior. Champion. And…virgin. Knox knows what he wants–and he gets it. All American Football player? Check. NFL pros scouting him? Check. Now, he’s set his sight on two things. The national title. And Ellie Campbell. Sure, she’s the sister of his fellow teammate, but that’s not going to stop him. Especially not when he’s convinced Ellie is the one.

…but he’s never met her before.

But Ellie isn’t as sure. She’s trying to start a new life and she’s not interested in a relationship…with anyone. Beside it’s not just her cardinal rule of never dating her brother’s teammates that keeps her away, but Ellie has a dark secret that would jeopardize everything Knox is pursuing.

Knox has no intention of losing. Ellie has no intention of giving in.

I lock my legs to keep from falling over and pull out the biggest barrel I have. “Masters, there are things about me that if you knew you wouldn’t want to spend another minute in my presence.”

He considers my words, the silence taking on a heaviness and part of me already aches for what I could have if I was just any other girl at Western. “Have you killed anyone?” he finally asks. I can feel his eyes assessing me and I keep my gaze averted afraid of what

I’ll see in his moss green gaze.

“Have you slept with my brother?”
“What?” I can’t prevent myself from gawking at Masters, who’s smiling as he asks the question. “No! God, I’ve never even met him!”

“Are you catfishing poor athletes from Auburn? Wait, don’t answer that because I don’t think I’d find that objectionable. Oh, I have it—” He snaps his fingers.

“This isn’t a joke, Masters.”

He tucks a stray piece of hair behind my ear. “Until you tell me what it is, it’s not a reason to be apart either.”

I suck in my lower lip to prevent throwing myself at him and telling him to take me.

“Why?” I ask helplessly.

“Because I like you.”

He grips me by the chin and lays down gentlest, sweetest kiss. In that kiss he tells me everything. That he wants me. That he’s willing to take it slow. That he’s not giving up.

He kisses me as if this is the only thing he wants to do for the next ten hours.

His lips barely move but I can feel everything in me surge toward him. The short wedges
I shoved on this morning suddenly feel precarious. I grip his shoulders to steady myself and then find myself rising up on my tiptoes to press deeper against him. He hauls me flush against him until I can no longer touch the floor.

His one hand palms nearly my entire back while the other angles my head for better access. He may be a virgin, but the guy knows how to kiss. His tongue is finding places inside my mouth that I didn’t even know would feel good.

All the pent up desire that has been boiling in me for days comes pouring out of me. I attack him with my next kiss, biting his lower lip, sucking on his tongue.  Against my belly I can feel the hard ridge of his erection.

“God,” I breathe as he abandons my mouth to trace the line of my jaw with his lips. He growls in response and pushes me back against the bookcases but I don’t even mind that the shelves are biting into my back. I just want more.

And he gives it to me. We cling to each other, feeding off of each other’s seemingly endless need until I hear a gasp and then a muted giggle. And those two faint sounds somehow manage to break through the haze of lust and bring with it the realization that

I am in a very public place. I wriggle against him and he sets me down reluctantly.

“We’re in the bookstore,” I say in a scandalized voice.

“You’ve never kissed a guy in the bookstore before?” He grins, the wicked mischievous one I’m beginning to associate with something tremendously naughty. “There’s a first time for everything.”

My Review:

When I read the blurb for this book, I was curious and a bit amused. Knox Masters, college football hero extraordinaire and… virgin? Definitely a departure from the stereotype. I wondered if he’d be a prude, forever being seduced and hanging on tooth and nail to his virtue. You know what? This guy’s not a prude. In fact, he seems to have picked up a wealth of knowledge somewhere. Online, probably. The internet is for… never mind.

Knox actually comes across as quite the beast. He has healthy appetites. He doesn’t shy away from sex, but he wants it to be an intimate act with the woman for whom he meets and falls. That was refreshing. To add to the role reversal, the girl of his dreams, Ellie, would like nothing better than to get him in the sack (Sacked, get it? LOL) but he wants to work on their relationship first. Of course she agrees. Who wouldn’t fall for that sweetness?

It’s sweet, it’s hot and it made me laugh a lot. But it has some serious components, too.

Some of the supporting characters in this book are so real. Knox has an identical twin. In one scene, they test Ellie to see if she can tell them apart and I was suddenly doing an ugly cry. It totally blindsided me. Guess I’m a sucker for punishment because I thought it was the best thing ever.

This story was pleasantly unpredictable. I never knew what was going to happen next. Even the ending surprised me. Readers who don’t mind a bit of voyeurism will likely give it 5 stars but this old-fashioned (dinosaur) girl will give it 4.5. I hope there will be sequels because this was a lot of fun. Looking forward to more from Jen Frederick.
